Character Creation Guidelines

The most integral component of any server is the player. Immersion begins with the module, but it ends with you. So here are some things to consider when creating a character. What is this character's age, sex, race? What region of Faerûn does this character come from? What do we know about this character's family? What are this character's hopes, fears, beliefs, motivations? What has this character accomplished in life and what does he/she wish to accomplish in the Moonsea? What does this character seek in friends, and find in enemies? A good character is more than just a collection of stats and snappy one-liners. Having a good backstory is very helpful when the time comes to interact with others. Remember, the story of your character is more important than the stats.

That said, please refrain from character histories unsuited to the starting level: You start at level 1 not level 20. A level 1 fighter may have fought for King Azoun, but he did not defeat a black dragon, or stop a demon invasion. Likewise, a level 1 wizard may have studied in the same city as Elminister, but he did not decipher the Netherscrolls, nor does he have extensive knowledge of planar travel.

Furthermore, in game biographies should be limited to descriptions of physical appearances, clothing, armaments, mood, demeanor and other things that someone might notice about your character. Descriptions do not have to be huge, but please try to come up with at least a basic physical description of your character.

Please, don't leave your bios blank, and don't use "RP to find out" in your bio, both are a lazy practices that don't add to the general mood of the server. The effort you put forth in constructing an interesting bio goes a long way towards creating an immersive roleplaying environment for everyone. Also, don't use established fantasy/fictional/historical names: there will be no Conans or Connans, Gandalfs, Gandelfs, Gandulfs, Bruce Waynes, Isaac Hayes, or Saddam Husseins on this server. You will be asked to remake your character.

We're allowing ECL races up to ECL2. Certain subraces will suffer hidden penalties in the form of conversation trees limited by subrace, lesser access to merchants and NPCs of all sorts. Further, we are capping by XP (not level) to maintain ECL. So an Aasimar will only be able to reach 19 class levels, as opposed to a human who can reach 20. Tieflings, drow, and half-drow will not have an easy road on this server. Take this into account when planning your character. Don't build characters with hair/skin colors that do not match the subrace: use coloration appropriate for the subrace. Green humans, purple dwarves, obsidian surface elves, etc etc.: you will be asked to remake that character.

Prestige Classes: There may be restrictions or changes. If a PrC is locked, the level will be removed. As we find out more about the classes, we'll be updating this list.

  • Red Dragon Disciple: After some discussion, we've decided to ban Red Dragon Disciple because the rarity and exotic nature of half-dragons in Faerun runs counter to our focus on core races.

Cleric and Paladin Classes: In an order to maintain game balance, Clerics and Paladins are expected to select a FR deity. Clerics are expected to select the appropriate domains for the deity. If a cleric does not select an appropriate domain from the domain listings in the deity section, then they will be de-leveled via scripted check and will have to redo that level. See the deities section.

Multiclassing: As long as your multiclass strategy isn't exploitative of game mechanics, feel free to multiclass. Exploitative multiclassing could be something on the order of (Paladin 1, Blackguard 1, Sorcerer 18). There are more, but we don't want to give out ideas. If it feels like an exploit, it probably is, so don't do it.

Skillpoint Saving: You are not allowed to carry over more than 1 point. If you do, then you will be de-leveled via a scripted check.
